Stock Donations

Stock or mutual fund shares that have appreciated in value can be used to make very efficient charitable contributions. Generally, by donating appreciated securities, tax on the capital gain income can be avoided, while the fair market value of the contributed securities can be taken as a charitable deduction. This can be an optimal solution for securities for which the tax basis cannot be readily determined.
